Obituary For Robert J Ulrich, Sr.

“Robert “Bob” J Ulrich Sr, a resident of Putnam Valley for 47 years passed away at his home on May 7th. He was 77. Born in the Bronx, NY to Edgar C. and Hilda (nee Hosszer) Ulrich in June of 1947, Bob was active in the Boy Scouts of America and earned the Order of the Arrow as an Eagle Scout from Troop 182 in the Bronx. After graduating high school in June of 1966 he enlisted in the United States Air Force that September which began a decades long military career.

A proud patriot, Bob served his country over 50 years, 4 years in the Air Force, 6 years in the Army Reserve and an additional 12 years in the Air Force Reserve.

After meeting on a blind date, Bob married Mary Hitzelberger, of Manhattan NY, in June of 1974. The couple had three children, Robert J Ulrich Jr, Edgar “Jim” Ulrich and Jennifer E. Ulrich. Letters he wrote Mary during their courtship and subsequent marriage describe his commitment and devotion to her and their little family they were raising in the house at the end of Peach Lane. Like many military wives before her, Mary cherished those letters and kept them wrapped with ribbon in the drawer of her dresser.

Bob retired from Consolidated Edison in Astoria Queens, where he worked as a machinist for over 35 years.

In “retirement”, Bob held the honor of being Commander of VFW Post 391 in Putnam Valley, NY, for 19 years.

Robert is survived by Mary, his wife of over 50 years, their three children, Robert J Ulrich Jr., Edgar “Jim” Ulrich and Jennifer E. Ulrich, seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, his devoted sister and caregiver, Valentina Drummond and her partner, Mike Hansen.

He is predeceased by his brother Edgar Carl Ulrich Jr. (1944-2022).

A wake will be held at Heritage Funeral Home, 35 Morrissey Drive, Putnam Valley, NY 10579, on Monday, 5/12, from 3 to 6 p.m.

The funeral service will be on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by interment with military honors at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Putnam Valley.

Robert was a 9/11 first responder, and his family is asking that donations be made in Robert’s name to Tunnel to Towers Foundation,
