Raymond Carra, of Putnam Valley, New York, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2024, surrounded by the family he adored.
Ray was born in Manhattan, New York, on June 4, 1935, the fifth son to his parents, the late Ciriaco and Concetta (Calvanese) Carra. He married the love of his life, Ann (Giordano) Carra, on August 14, 1960, and they began their journey. In 1973, Ray and Ann moved to their home in Putnam Valley, New York, where they raised their six children. They shared a beautiful life together.
After graduating from high school, Ray enlisted in the United States Navy and worked as an aircraft mechanic from 1953-1960. He was also a member of the Army National Guard from 1970-1984.
Ray’s work ethic was as strong as his love for his family. A carpenter, by trade, and a member of various unions, Ray worked on many building/construction sites. He then became Housing Inspector for the City of New York from 1966-1991, and, before his retirement, was in charge of grounds and maintenance for Mount Saint Florence in Peekskill, New York.
In later years, Ray enjoyed taking care of his garden, lawn, house, and anything that had to do with outside work. He also enjoyed being a member of the Senior Center in Putnam Valley and made many friends there.
But Ray’s greatest accomplishment was his family. Ray’s life was a testament to the values of hard work, dedication and the importance of family. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed a lifetime of family gatherings and traditions – and treasured every minute! He also loved dancing and had a special ability of being the “Baby Whisperer.”
Ray was a devoted and caring husband for almost sixty years to his beloved wife, Ann, who passed away in June, 2020. He was also a loving father to his six adoring children, Joann Swarner (John), Gerard Carra, Maria Monahan (Richard), Christine Carra, Loretta Estay (Claudio) and Anthony Carra (Michelle). He also leaves behind eleven grandchildren – Daniel, Kimberly, Allison, Jamie, John, Janine, Damian, William, Anthony, Christopher and Anna and twelve great-grandchildren.
Ray was loved so much and will be dearly missed by his family and friends. He will be remembered for his love of life, strong-will, and for being a role-model – as he was a hard-working man with a big heart who always thought of and helped others. The memories he created will be cherished forever in the hearts of his loved ones.
“POP, you will always be in our hearts. There aren’t enough words to express to you the gratitude for all the love you gave us, and all of our love for you.”
