Obituary For Muriel (Agnes) Keating

Agnes “Muriel” Keating went home on a August 11th. Muriel was born in Coatbridge, Scotland on February 4th 1919. She moved to the United States as a wee lass, and settled in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, with her mom and dad. Working in Manhattan, she and her friend Loretta attended a dance for veterans, and here she met the love of her life and partner, Phil Keating. They married and moved to Putnam Vlley in 1950 into their new home on Oscawana Lake Road. Phil owned a local real estate and insurance business, and Muriel settled into raising their family, while becoming active in many local institutions; Putnam Valley Fire Auxiliary, Altar and Rosary Society of Saint Columbanus, and the Putnam Valley Democratic Club, to name a few. Family however was the center of Muriel’s life and she enjoyed holidays, especially Christmas. …and of course the perfect Manhattan. After selling the family business, Phil and Muriel enjoyed traveling with a group of friends, even trying white water rafting in their 70s. After Phil passed, Muriel found the Putnam Valley Seniors and settled into a leadership role. At her table up front, she greeted new arrivals while playing cards and mahjong. For many years, Muriel helped plan and schedule various bus trips for the seniors. She stepped down from this position at the age of 97. Muriel is predeceased by her husband. She is survived by her children Nancy (Gary) Wulfhop, Phil (Jerilyn Broege) Keating, Ross Keating and his partner Sue Jackson, her daughter-in-law Maureen Keating, grandchildren Kimberly (Michael) Nicastro, Daniel (Jess) Keating, and Phil (Mary) Keating, Gary Wulfhop and Richard Wulfhop and her great- grandchildren Carolyn, Anthony, Lil, Jack, Ben, Eric, and Luke. Mom or Nana lived a long wonderful and fruitful life. She saw many changes and rolled with many punches, not always wanting to change, but always moving forward. She will be remembered for those big blue eyes, her smile, and her love of life, and most important, her family.
Visiting hours are on Sunday from 4-7 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, Morrissey Drive, Putnam Valley. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Church of the North American Martyrs in Putnam Valley, and interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery.
