Obituary For Marcella Schmittman

Marcella Schmittman born December 5, 1939, in New York to Catherine (O’Neil) and Joseph Hanlon, received the last rites of the Catholic Church and passed away peacefully on 3-2-2024 at the NY State Veterans Home in Montrose, NY. She was predeceased by her sisters, Ellen Haggelson and Patricia Whittaker, her husband Paul Schmittman and Andreas Piehler; her granddaughter Stacy Piehler.

Marcella attended local Peekskill schools, and Mercy College where she studied art and music. She was known for her keen eye and knowledge of women’s fashion, both in clothing and jewelry. She was sought after as a salesperson in fine women’s shops in the area for many years. Marcella also ran an antiques business out of her landmark Putnam Valley home where she interacted with many of her local friends and tourists. She enjoyed people, and thrived on the interactions and the bargaining of her finds…if she could be coaxed into letting them go you counted yourself lucky.

Marcella made beautiful creations from yarn; bedspreads, tablecloths, and many other lovely heirlooms for her family. She thrived on the chaos of having a large family and all that entailed, including the flying squirrels her boys took on as pets one year. You never could take her anywhere, even another state where she didn’t know someone and you’d then need to settle in for a bit while she caught up. Everyone who met her fell in love and knew she was a gem among gems. Always smiling, she had a strong spiritual life and attended church faithfully.

Marcella was a loving and much-loved Sister, Aunt, Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Marcella is survived by her sons and their families; Ronald, Andrew, Robert, Dennis, and Joseph Piehler, as well as her stepson Paul Schmittman and family. Also survived by her beloved sister, Kitty Weber, and grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she loved very much and received much joy from. Her many nieces and nephews cherish the memories of her love and affection. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 8, 2024, at 11 a.m. at the Church of the North American Martyrs on Oscawana Lake Road in Putnam Valley and the interment of cremains will follow at Tompkins Corners Cemetery. May Marcella rest in peace forevermore in the arms of the Blessed Mother and may Perpetual light shine upon her.
