O Lord, glorify his station, shelter him under the pavilion of thy supreme mercy, cause him to enter thy glorious paradise, and perpetuate his existence in thine exalted rose garden, that he may plunge into the sea of light in the world of mysteries…………. Abdu’l-Baha
Freidoun (Fred) Omidvaran, age 88, a devoted & active member of the Baha’i faith, ascended into the eternal realm on Wednesday, October 2 at 9:30 am as a patient at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, NY, a renowned hospital known for their compassionate hospice care to their patients. Tragically, after experiencing a series of neurological disorders over a number of years of cognitive decline, aphasia, mobility difficulties, vision problems, etc., in 2021 he was eventually diagnosed with a rare disorder called Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) an atypical form of Parkinsonism) and which he eventually succumbed to.
He leaves behind his beloved family – his wife, Judith Omidvaran & son, Shain (Shaheen) Omidvaran, Amornrut (Bie) Wandee Omidvaran (daughter-in-law) & Aroon Wandee (Amornrut’s mother).
Fred was born on July 18, 1936 in the city of Hamedan Iran which is located in west-central Iran and according to Jewish tradition, the city of Hamedan was the capital of ancient Persia. Hamedan is known for the famous tombs of Queen Esther and her cousin Mordecai who saved the general annihilation of the Jews in the Persian empire.
Fred and his family (parents & siblings) have always been devoted and active members of the Baha’i faith. Fred’s birth family & their spouses are his parents – Yuness & Saltanat Omidvaran (deceased), two brothers: Cyrus Varan and wife – Karen (New Zealand) & Shahab Omidvaran and wife – Betsy (Ireland) 3 sisters – Parvin Ghaznavid and husband – Couros – deceased – (Florida/Switzerland), Puran Imani (Portugal) & Mahin Stanley (Kansas/deceased) and many nieces, nephews & cousins many of who reside in countries throughout the world.
Fred began his life in the United States in 1958 when he left Iran to attend the University of Kansas where he majored in civil engineering. After completing his studies he obtained his United States permanent residency and eventually citizenship. When Fred first came to this country he missed his family a great deal and was very homesick. He would make several trips to Iran to visit his family or they would travel to Kansas or New York.
In 1964 he moved to New York City and began his career in civil engineering working for many of the major civil engineering firms. He first resided in Riverdale and then Pelham Parkway in the Bronx. Fred & Judy married in 1968 and continued to reside in Pelham Gardens in the Bronx. They had two beloved sons, Sina Omidvaran born June 16, 1978, & Shain (Shaheen) Omidvaran born November 17, 1979. Sina was diagnosed with autism and passed away on June 9, 2007 from SUDEP (Sudden Unexplained Death by Epilepsy).
Fred assisted many of his family members residing in Iran to flee Iran after the revolution in 1979 because of religious persecution of the Baha’i and other religious groups to enable them to settle in this country.
Fred and the family eventually moved to Dobbs Ferry and then Crompond (a hamlet in the town of Cortlandt) in 1986 where Fred had designed and constructed their new home. Fred soon became an active member in the Mohegan Colony Association and served on the board for many years. He also advocated to save the two-family zoning within Crompond by attending many town of Cortlandt board meetings to maintain the two-family zoning within Crompond.
Fred was a very devoted and caring husband and father and enriched the lives of his family in many ways and will always be loved deeply and remain in our hearts forever. Fred was fun-loving and enjoyed finding new and interesting activities to explore. He easily developed friendships with whoever he encountered and seeing if he could be of assistance to them.
Baha’i writing on the journey of the soul:
O lord: grant me a measure of thy grace and loving-kindness, thy care and protection, thy shelter and bounty, that the end of my days may be distinguished above their beginning, and the close of my life may open the portals to thy manifold blessings. May thy loving-kindness and bounty descend upon me at every moment, and thy forgiveness and mercy be vouchsafed with every breath, until, beneath the sheltering shadow of thine upraised standard, I may at last repair to the kingdom of the all-praised. Baha’i faith: Abdu’l-Baha
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 12th at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Putnam Valley. Family and friends will gather at 11 am outside the cemetery office before processing to the grave.
